An unusual find and likely custom made, we believe this antique natural Sapphire and Pearl beaded necklace dates to the early 20th century, but its appeal is timeless.
Alternate baroque shaped wild Saltwater Oyster Pearls and natural hand drilled Sapphires are beautifully graduated to a lustrous and ethereal effect; the adorable miniature gems are most likely to have come from the Indian sub-continent, perhaps Sri Lanka (as was Ceylon) justly famed for both wild Pearls and Sapphires which could be found there. Sapphires and Rubies could once be found in gravelled riverbeds and wild Pearls in the seas bordering Mannar. Read about these here.
These resources were owned and managed by the British at the time and so this is how we imagine this little necklace found her way here. The whole really does have a charmingly natural and special feel! We have rethreaded this necklet by hand (which took some hours!) and so it is ready for a new beginning. It measures 21 inches when fastened with the original hand made 9ct Gold barrel clasp which is nicely easy to fasten.
