Circa 1900, an adorable antique stick pin (or tie pin) often worn at the time on a cravat at the neck as a touch of individuality. A hand carved shell Cameo of clasped hands simply mounted in mellow 9ct yellow Gold including the twisted pin.
In Roman times the joining of the right hands; dextrarum iunctio was a symbolism of harmony, affinity, friendship, and loyalty and are seen in many jewellery items.
The right hand, consecrated by the deity, was a symbolism of fidelity and as such often gifted as love tokens.
Also historically known as “Fede” from the Italian phrase mani in fede “hands clasped in faith”.
The right hand is also proffered in business when dealing a deal.
Perhaps this piece was originally gifted to a groom on the day of their wedding, or an anniversary, it would certainly be a sentimental gift today
