In it's own fitted box, this brooch and matching earrings is a gracious survivor from the 1850's, when botanical jewellery was immensely fashionable in Britain. In the Victorian language of flowers; which was the sentiment behind this romantic love of floral motifs, ferns have the meaning 'sincerity', and in this case their delicate frippery has been picked out in the most finely fashioned gold work surrounding and each element has been set with a darkly sparkling cognac coloured Citrine.
It is quite likely that the Citrines were sourced in Scotland as Scottish jewellery too was enjoying a renaissance at the time. The metal is unmarked but tested 15ct yellow gold (a standard used solely in the UK 1854-1932).
The Earrings measure 6cm from the top of the earwire, the brooch 4cms across.
